A place for artists to get together and hang out and talk about whatever artists talk about. This is not, I repeat not a meeting! This is a social gathering and snacks are welcome and encouraged! Please come and share your thoughts, articles, tangeants, good books, whatever!

Fall Studio Crawl Oct 21st

Tour area artists studios on Saturday, October 21st from 10am to 6 pm. Visit fifteen studios as well as a group show at the Old Art Building in downtown Leland. Maps are available in Traverse City at DeYoung's and the Dennos Museum Center; At Twisted Fish Gallery in Elk Rapids, and at the Interlochen public library. Meeting times will change now for the summer, the next will take place on Saturday, July 1st at 10 am. As usual, we're meeting at Charly Hansen's studio. (514 Second St [between Oak and Maple] studio is in the alley to the north with the Will/Case weather vane on the roof. Park on 2nd and walk north through the yard between 514 and the house to the west. Look for AWA signs.) This will allow us the rest of our day for play.

Scott Nelles has agreed to become our AWA representative at Traverse Area Arts Council (TAAC) board meetings and the group agreed that that was good. Thank you much Scott! We also agreed to make AWA a member of the TAAC as a “Community Based Arts & Culture Organization & Business” which costs $125.

We discussed 4 possible future shows to put on between now and January.
1) During the TC Film Festival in late July --John O’Neill will contact Debra McKeon at the TAAC to discuss the idea of using the space beside the old State Theatre.
2) Festival of the Senses in September – Melonie will talk to Rick Coates and Debra McKeon to investigate possibilities.
3) A Winter Show—anyone with ideas please bring them to the next meeting.
4) Fall Studio Crawl–anyone interested in opening your studio for a Fall Crawl, possibly in conjuction with the Leelenau Art Crawl, please contact John O’Neill to help organize. johnoneill@centurytel.net

Volunteers Needed !
Melonie is looking for a couple of people who would be willing to type in names and addresses of folks for our data-base so that we have a proper mailing list for future shows. Anyone who can do this please contact me at frognoise@centurytel.net 275-1364.

We will be discussing our current show, "One Week in May plus Three More in June", looking at future show ideas and venues, and taking care of business. Also...back by popular demand the "Salon de Refuse", --bring in works rejected from the May show and we'll hang them up here to share with each other for the afternoon. May Show Success!

It was a packed house at the opening reception for Art Works Alliance's first juried Fine Arts Exhibition held the evening of May 25 at Building 50 at the Grand Traverse Commons. Sponsored by The Minervini Group, this exhibition of over sixty works juried by Diane Kramer well represented the depth and talent of this region's artists. Timm Arthur Sahs received the first place award of $300 for his piece, Storm #7; Flora Hoffman received the second prize of $200 for her piece Shrine #3; and Maria Dimitroff won third prize, $100, for her piece Gallery Walk. In addition to ten honorable mention awards awarded to Tradd Featherstone, Thomas L. Fettes, Ron Gianola, Jason Kasper, Rachael Lipscomb, Kristine Morris, Julie Pearson, Betsy Boyett Sagers, Angela Schuler, and Kristy L. Sumera.

This group began to come together early in 2006, when area artists began to meet to discuss forming their own independent arts group. From these monthly meetings and much community support, Art Works Allliance was created. This exhibition is our first venture. The exhibition has been extended to June 24.

Art Works Alliance would like to extend a warm thank you to the show sponsors: The Minervini Group, Traverse Area Arts Council, SEEDS, and The Copy Shop. Their generosity and support are greatly appreciated.

Call for Entries/NM Potters and Sculptors

Northern Michigan Potters and Sculptors Summer Art Fair, July 15-16th at Twisted Fish Gallery. They are looking for artists to demonstrate during the fair. There is no fee if you just want to demonstrate in either Ceramic Arts or Sculpting, to promote yourself and your artwork. There is a fee if you want a booth space or table and space in the community tent. So far we have hands-on wheel throwing with Donna Johnston and Victoria Gallup, glass beadmaking with Rebecca V.S. Poinsett, and hopefully raku firing if I can get Julie Sanco to bring her kiln. We are always looking for a variety of demonstrating artists. Demonstrations will be in the beautiful blooming gardens out in front of Twisted Fish, along S. Bayshore Dr. And, in front of the new Cottage Gallery at Twisted Fish.

Come one come all to the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony for our May Juried Fine Arts Exhibition from 6 to 9 pm. We received a tremendous response to our Call For Entry request--clearly there is a strong need for exhibitions of this kind in our area. Juror Diane Kramer put together a beautiful show of outstanding work. We hope you will join us for this celebration of art in our area.

The exhibition is located at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons in Building 50, on the floor above Stella's and is sponsored by The Minervini Group, SEEDS, The Copy Shop and TraverseARTS. Their support is sincerely appreciated.

The show will run from May 25 through June 24th.

Art Works Alliance is getting interested in the "Festival of the Senses" here in Traverse City being held September 15th - 24th. It has been suggested that because the Epicurean Classic is happening then that maybe we could hold a 'theme show' centered around food, Yes? "All those in flavor signify by saying I". The "I's" have it. So get out those still life arrangements and fire up those Cezanne pallets kiddies. We're going to makes em all hungry.

Eligibility
Artists 18 and older are invited to submit two entries created within the last two years. There is a $20 entry fee for up to two submissions. AWA will take no commission on work sold through this exhibition, but donations are always appreciated.

Media/Presentation
Original work in all media is eligible. Due to limited space in the exhibition, we are strongly recommending that work submitted be limited in size. We are not putting forth a specific restriction, rather we are letting artists know that acceptance of large-scale submissions will depend on availability of gallery space. All work must be ready for hanging/presentation. Some pedestals will be available for 3D work.

Awards: There will be a $300 1st prize, $200 2nd prize and $100 3rd prize.

Juror:
Diane Kramer has enjoyed a rich teaching career in the fine arts. She began her teaching career while still an undergraduate at California State University, Sacramento. Since then, she has also taught in San Francisco, Stockton, St. Louis, Hungary, Ireland, Germany, and now Michigan. She was co-founder of an alternative art space called the 750 Gallery in Sacramento. She also is committed to teaching art to with people with disabilities. Her credentials include: BFA 1987; MFA 1989-Painting and Ceramic Sculpture; MFA 1990-Ceramic and Mixed Media Sculpture.

The Art Works Alliance is an independent council of northern Michigan artists who have joined forces to ensure that area artists have venues in which to display their works and that the community at large has the opportunity to view and appreciate them. There has never been a more important time in our region for proactive efforts to keep the region’s art community vibrant.
